Reputed to have been ripped from the chest of the greatest vampire to have ever existed, Janos Audron, the Heart of Darkness restores vampiric unlife. Life is precious, Janos discovered - as it was torn throbbing and bleeding from his own body.
He could use the Heart of Darkness artefacts at any time to restore 1/3 of his health, adding the blood of the hearts to his own blood vial.
If Kain possessed a Heart of Darkness, it would instantly revive him if he was defeated by his enemies.
